The story of Joseph’s Market is 98 years in the making. A history made at 74 Front Street, originally the heart of the Lebanese Community, in downtown Waterville, Maine. A story which continues today. The new Owners, Danny and Kaitlin McKinnis, husband and wife, have years of local customer service experience.
Danny brings his master meat cutting skills, having been crafted starting at the old China General Store, working under Jack Sylvester for eighteen years, until the store changed hands. He then moved on to join the Joseph’s Market family in 2003, followed by Kaitlin in mid 2015, passing on his skills and knowledge, under the watchful eye of Kevin and Diane Joseph. Kevin taught many aspects of the business. “Service & Quality,” loyalty, knowing your customers names and their favorite cuts of meat, creating a personal touch for new and old relationships to prosper.
Joseph’s Market is an iconic landmark on Front Street in Waterville. The names are synonymous. Front Street is now two-way, which makes access to the market far easier. Entering the store invokes childhood memories for many. The moment you grip the sturdy handrail and step up onto the newly formed concrete steps and enter through the left side glass door, you feel like you are home – a timeless atmosphere.
You might remember a childhood visit there with your parents. One of the brothers would offer you a piece of sharp cheese on a tiny piece of wax paper. Now that would wake up your taste buds, while your mom made her selection.
The store has been given a new look, a fresh produce case filled with a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, and a small selection of grocery items to complement your dinner choices. At the store’s center, to showcase their “new niche” creations, is filled with over thirty-five, rotating, made in house, sausages and bratwurst. Flavors include Philly Cheese Steak, Teriyaki Pineapple, Maple Blueberry, Mango Habañero, Hot and Sweet Italian…the list goes on. No matter what you are craving, there is definitely something for you.
Joseph’s sparkling clean facility, guides its patrons to the large meat display toward the back of the store where friendly faces await you. Don’t forget to look up. The ceiling and walls are adorned with photos of Joseph’s Market patrons and family members who served the city throughout the decades. Many locals remember Peter, Roy, Ariel, Kevin and Glen, in the back, while Jesse- and Diane J. served you at the front.
