Juliette’s Bakery & Deli – The End of an Era?

April 30, 2026 will be the last day that Juliette’s Bakery & Deli in Waterville will be open.

Gerard Turmelle, Juliette’s current owner, is ready to retire. Gerard has steered the Juliette’s helm since 2020. His sister, Juliette, opened the bakery and deli in 2009. She shared her baking skills and creative menu with us locals, to provide freshly made whoopie pies, lemon squares, bread, pies, and the most amazing fresh made deli sandwiches and fresh dough pizza all in a sparkling clean facility.

The business and the building are on the market with Coldwell Banker Plourde for the unbelievable price of $275,000. All equipment is included plus the two apartments upstairs will offset the mortgage.

The Turmelle family has been a fixture in the north end since 2000. Gerard’s brother, Arthur, who owns the building, has agreed to sell the property as part of a package deal.

Gerard says it was a very hard decision to retire and he will feel very sad to say goodbye. He said he has an amazing staff and most of all, wonderful customers! He will miss seeing all of his patrons, but feels he wanted time to enjoy his retirement while in good health.

Gerard is a very humble, down to earth man, and credits his customers and What About Maine? Trivia Magazine for putting them on the map. Folks from near and far have found their way to Ticonic Street and Juliette’s. It is the only advertising he uses. Customers love winning Juliette’s gift cards. Even to this day he sees new faces. He says many tell him that they saw his ad in What About Maine?. The winners joyfully hand over their gift cards with a big smile!

There will be two “Last Gift Card Winners” – one will be from the magazine, and one from our What About Maine? Facebook page. Finding Warmth in Community

Tucked away inside Maine’s Capitol is a Life Skills Program filled with smiling faces, meaningful connections, and good old-fashioned competition. With an ever-growing group of members who read What About Maine? , compete each month to earn the highest trivia score, and race to finish word searches the fastest, we knew we had to stop by and hear their story.

It all began when Jon, a member of the group, discovered the paper and started answering the trivia with Coach Kevin. Nearby, Shawn was working on a puzzle when he overheard and wanted to join. The rest is history. Before long, members and staff alike were recruited to take part. During our visit, we met Jon and Shawn, along with Nate, Chris, Zack, Tina, and several staff members.

The group shared how much they look forward to each new issue, eager to see who answered the most trivia questions correctly. Some of their favorite questions are the ones with funny or unexpected answers, which had both staff and members laughing as they recalled past moments. The group also enjoys the recipes featured in "Food for You & ME," often trying them out or printing them to take home.

Strongly connected to their community, the group frequently checks the What About Maine? Events Calendar. When asked about their sense of community, members shared that they enjoy shopping together, exercising at the YMCA, participating in local competitions, and attending sporting events, visiting museums, local fairs, and even amusement parks. Some members are part of Special Olympics bowling and swimming teams, while many volunteer with Meals on Wheels and the local food pantry.

When asked why they volunteer, the answer was unanimous: “It feels good to help others!” When we asked staff about their favorite parts of the program, the answer echoed that same joy. Coordinator Courtney said, “Just seeing them happy!” Staff members smiled, and so did the group. Coach Kevin added, “We try to make anything they might want happen.” That sparked an interesting question: if What About Maine? were to expand, what should we add? Chris didn’t hesitate – he suggested a joke section, which earned instant approval from the group.

Next month, members will attend A Night to Shine (Tim Tebow Foundation), a prom-like event where they’ll dress to the nines, ride in limousines, walk the red carpet, receive crowns, enjoy dinner and dancing, and create unforgettable memories. It’s clear that this group’s joy extends far beyond their home in Augusta.

With winter upon us, staying connected and involved can be challenging. While we’d love to say that What About Maine? alone is the cure for the winter blues, the truth runs deeper. Jon, Shawn, Nate, Chris, Zack, and Tina showed us that laughter, friendly competition, good food, time spent with friends, helping others, and focusing on what brings you joy (including What About Maine? ) are the real ingredients for staying connected all year long.

Quarry Road Alpine Ski Hill

BIG CHANGES ARE HAPPENING AT QUARRY ROAD TRAILS! After a 45-year absence, lift-served skiing is returning to Waterville! This winter Quarry Road Alpine Ski Hill is emerging as a transformed destination- one that blends grassroots skiing with thoughtful, forward-thinking improvements.

A newly improved access road now leads to an expansive paved parking lot welcoming more skiers, families and evening visitors.

On the hill itself, skiers will find expanded terrain due to a trail extension, an improved and lengthened ropetow lift and downhill trail lighting for night skiing and advanced snowmaking and grooming capabilities.

Together, these changes represent more than just infrastructure improvements. They reflect a commitment to making Quarry Road Alpine Ski Hill a year-round community asset. For Waterville, the new alpine hill is proof that small hills, when thoughtfully developed, can create big excitement!

Ski lessons are offered for grades 2-8 at Quarry Road. The four-week programs use the rope tow on the historic ski slope. This program has a Saturday and Sunday class option. All classes meet from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. There are two four-week sessions during the winter. The first session runs from late-December until late-January, and the second session runs from early-February until early-March.

Ski races are happening ever Wednesday in January (7, 14, 21, 28). Registration is at 6:00 p.m. at the tow rope building and races start at 6:30 p.m.

Tom's Redemption

A familiar face in the Fairfield area community is enjoying a new chapter in Benton. Tom Casey, brother of Pat Casey, of Casey’s Redemption in Fairfield, worked by his brother’s side for 18 years. Tom decided to continue on his own after Casey’s was sold earlier this year, and opened Tom’s Redemption.

Tom has 40 years of experience in the redemption business. An opportunity became available to Tom through Dixon’s Country Market. Dixon’s owned a separate building behind the store, which was once their own redemption center location. The building needed a little work but Tom took on the challenge with the help of Shawn and Amy Dixon. The center opened on October 14, 2025.

Tom admitted he missed all of his regular customers from the Fairfield location and the opportunity to serve the greater community weighed on his decision to continue. A visit to Casey’s, and now Tom’s, brings joy and laughter to each customer. Tom’s quick wit personally greets all who enter. He takes time to know his neighbors and brightens their day.

Quarry Road Trails – Four Season Fun

As winter settles across Waterville, Quarry Road Trails quietly transforms into a cross-country skier’s haven. Just two miles from downtown, the 216 acre park hosts 13.3 km (8.2 miles) of groomed Nordic ski trails, designed by Olympian John Morton to weave through a mix of open meadows, rolling hills, and wooded terrain.

One of the most impressive features at Quarry Road Trails is our snowmaking system, covering over 3 km of trail. Even when natural snowfall is thin, snowmakers Pisten Bully groomers ensure consistent coverage, making Quarry Road one of the most reliable Nordic ski spots in Maine.

Skiers of all levels are welcome. The trails are color-coded: green for beginners, blue for intermediates, and black for more advanced skiers. A gently rolling 2.3 km river loop follows near the Messalonskee Stream, offering scenic views and beginner-friendly terrain. There’s also a meadow loop groomed for both classic and skate skiing.

The ski area is open daily for Nordic skiing from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and more than a mile of trails are lit for night skiing until 9 p.m. Day tickets and season passes are reasonably priced, with special rates for Waterville residents.

After a 45-year absence, lift-served skiing is returning to Waterville! We’re going back to basics: a rope tow on the lower slopes of the historic Colby ski area will service beginner and intermediate slopes as well as a terrain park. The rope tow will have lights for night skiing all weekend. A season pass will let you ride the rope all season long.

Quarry Road Trails also fosters community through the Quarry Road Ski Club, which offers Nordic and Alpine ski programs for children and adults, from beginners to competitive racers, and Alpine ski instruction on weekends.

What began as an old ski area decades ago has grown into a vibrant, four-season outdoor recreation hub — but in winter, its heart truly belongs to cross-country skiers seeking groomed trails, reliable snow, and a welcoming community.

Kelly has a deep respect for her father’s legacy, and acknowledges that she has big shoes to fill–-but says she carries her father’s spirit with her every day. Moving forward, she has a clear resolve to honor her father’s principles that shaped the store from its earliest days, while also adding her own vision for the future.

Kelly is supported by a loyal, long-standing team—Dave, Jeremy, and Charles—whose dedication and experience have become essential to the store’s day-to-day success. Spenser grew up in Van Buren, Maine, where he learned early on that if something needed doing, you figured it out yourself. That small-town upbringing built a foundation of independence, hard work, and problem-solving that continues to define his career today.

After earning his Bachelor’s degree in Business from the University of Maine at Fort Kent in 2009, Spenser began his career as an auditor, gaining valuable experience in finance, management, and operations. Ambitious and goal-driven, he simultaneously pursued his Master’s in Business Administration at Thomas College, attending night classes while working full time. It was a demanding balance, but one that prepared him for a life of entrepreneurship.

The Entrepreneurial Leap

In 2012, Spenser took his first major step into business ownership by purchasing Burger Boy, a beloved seasonal restaurant in Caribou, Maine. Under his leadership, the local favorite thrived for seven successful seasons before he sold it in 2020, ready to take on new challenges.

Never one to stand still, Spenser launched Pizza Degree in 2015, a fast-style pizza concept with locations in Augusta and Waterville. The innovative idea quickly earned a loyal following with its fresh ingredients and quick-serve approach. In 2019, after four successful years, Spenser decided to move on from the restaurant industry to focus on new ventures and real estate development.

That same entrepreneurial drive led him to explore franchising. In 2020, he purchased a five-unit hair salon franchise, successfully operating and growing the business before being bought out by a larger franchisee owner — another successful chapter in his diverse career.

Building a Real Estate Portfolio

From 2012 through 2024, Spenser focused his energy on real estate acquisitions, purchasing over 100 multi-family units throughout Northern & Central Maine. What began as a single four-unit apartment building in Augusta had grown into an impressive portfolio over 100+ rental units, providing quality housing while strengthening the local economy.

Spenser lives in Oakland with his wife, their 11-year-old son Mason, and their beloved Goldendoodle, Tilly. Known affectionately as “the good girl,” Tilly is part of the family business too — she often steals the spotlight during photo ops for the Doggy Wash at the Gardiner location.

Whether in real estate, restaurants, or car washes, Spenser’s mission remains the same: to create opportunity, invest locally, and build businesses that serve people well.

Mechanically inclined and unafraid of hard work, Spenser takes pride in being hands-on. “I’ve got a great crew,” he says. “They’re willing to do whatevers needed every day — it makes every day an adventure.”

A New Kind of Clean

In 2021, Spenser expanded his entrepreneurial reach by purchasing the Purple Cow Car Wash & Laundromat at 10 Skowhegan Road, right next to the Purple Cow Restaurant. Determined to modernize and elevate the experience, he installed new washers and dryers, repaved the parking lot, and upgraded the car wash equipment.

Then came a defining move — keeping both the car wash and laundromat open 24/7, the only facilities of their kind in Central Maine. This customer-first approach gave people the freedom to clean on their schedule.

Always innovating, Spenser introduced Touchless Car Wash technology, providing a superior, paint-safe cleaning experience. The upgrade was an instant hit, and North Country Car Wash soon expanded to Winthrop, Gardiner, and Waterville, each location featuring its own touchless bay.

“Customers don’t mind paying a little extra,” Spenser says. “They know their cars are being protected.”

Looking Ahead

When asked what’s next, Spenser grins knowingly. “2026 will bring some surprises!”

NinjAdventure Zone with Jesse Labreck

Have you watched American Ninja Warrior and seen contestants flying through the air and leaping from one object to another? Their courage and strength are no longer realities that are far away from Central Mainers. That’s right! Jesse “Flex” Labreck, a Central Maine native and “Ninja Warrior” herself, has partnered with the Alfond Youth & Community Center (AYCC) to bring everyone the joy and thrill of competing on a Ninja Course themselves.

Jesse Labreck is one of American Ninja Warrior’s top women champions. She grew up in Oakland, Maine, graduated from Messalonskee High School in 2008, and the University of Maine Orono in 2012. She continues to hold several high school and college track and field records to this day!

After graduating college, Jesse was looking for a way to continue her athletic training and competitive drive. She met Maine native, Jon Alexis Jr. known as “Jon the Giant,” who encouraged her to try out for American Ninja Warrior competitions. After trying it for herself, she fell in love, and found her success.

Jesse met her husband, Chris DiGangi, and together they became coaches. Over the years Chris had built his own “Ninja Sport Network” business. In 2024 while living in the Chicago area, they welcomed their son, Luca, and yearned to be closer to home.

All the while back home, the AYCC was breaking ground on how to bring the foundation of “Personal Fitness Achievement” for all to the forefront of their growing brand. That’s when the AYCC began looking at new ways to add a ninja adventure zone for kids of all ages. This was achievable with a two-story climbing wall and ninja obstacle course that was designed to build strength in fun ways. It was Patrick Guerette’s (COO) keen eye for detail that started the expansion at 126 North Street.

In August 2024, the AYCC held their grand opening for the NinjAdventure Zone. In attendance were Maine native Jonathan Alexis Sr., also from American Ninja Warrior, along with Jesse, who had been cheering the project all along. Shortly after attending, she received a phone call and was offered the opportunity to move back home while continuing to reach her goal of training the next generation of ninja kids!

The whole AYCC family welcomed her leadership in the NinjAdventure Zone experience! She has used her creative skills to design programs for all age groups, including the first pre-school ninja class. AYCC after school youth participants have embraced their time in the gym and some have continued to take extra classes.

There is a ninja gym in Portland, though sadly not run by an American Ninja Warrior. This has drawn families from the greater Portland and Bangor areas, as well as across Central Maine, to enjoy the AYCC’s NinjAdventure Zone classes. Jesse conducts ninja classes each week and is enjoying getting to know her students. She helps them develop the skills needed to compete at higher levels and problem solve life’s “in the moment” challenges! Classes are offered to different age groups including teen time and adult open gym. She is hoping to offer competitions outside of the AYCC family of athletes in the future.

The ninja gym is also available for birthday parties, family fun afternoons, business retreats, and schools for team building skills. The AYCC NinjAdventure Zone experience will create uplifting positive effects for anyone willing to give it a try.

October 2025 marks another amazing year for What About Maine? We are celebrating 14 years of publishing this labor of love! Our owner and publisher, Marty Allen, has guided our journey through the ongoing difficulties in publishing a printed magazine.

Currently we print our magazines at Lincoln Press located in Damariscotta, Maine, thus fulfilling our goal of making this magazine completely produced in Maine. We are shining a light on everything Maine! We distribute our magazines from Gardiner to Bingham, China to Winthrop, covering the Kennebec Valley each month. Our small crew of Marty, Duane, Clare and Samantha fan out and hand deliver the latest issue all across the valley.

We have upgraded our website WhatAboutMaine.com so you can browse the entire magazine online from wherever you might be. You can answer the trivia questions and enter to win one of our monthly prizes. Thanks to our designer, Kristina, with Imagine Design Company, for keeping our website fresh!

We have been on a mission to increase our viewership for the past couple of years. We have added Samantha Turner as our social media manager. She has developed our Facebook presence and created a monthly calendar to highlight each page and story. Monthly favorites like our community events calendar and “Food for You & Me?” receive some of our highest view counts. All of our advertisers are also featured throughout the month.

Samantha has put her social media skills to use by developing our online contests. They have received amazing results! We partnered with Snow Pond’s Bowl in the Pines to bring their summer concerts tickets to our What About Maine? readers. They gave us pairs of tickets and a parking pass to all of their top shows this season. Those contests received over 11,098 views. Samantha was able to boost the posts and Snow Pond gave us extra tickets close to the concerts, delighting our Facebook fans. No matter the challenge she has created opportunities for our readers! In the past year, we have had over 481,600 views of posts that readers have seen.

The top content in the past year was the Windsor Fair tickets give-away with 29,500 views, 322 entries, all for 10 pairs of day passes. The Goldsmith’s Landscaping & Maple Street Moving story in “What About You?” had over 9,000 views. North Country Rivers White Water Rafting Company story over 5,100 views. Blistered Fingers received over 4,500 views. Prize winners let us know how much they enjoyed their prizes and feedback was positive.

Honorable mentions from outside the past year include Bolley’s Famous Franks video topped 10,000 views in one day. The Maine Maple Producers video for Maine Maple Sunday brought in hundreds of new customers that weekend.

We have also challenged ourselves to include some advertiser requests. Greg from Fairfield Laundromat asked us to sell his business. I said “ WHAT?! WAM sell a commercial property? We’ve never tried that! We are not real estate brokers.” He said, “Let’s try!” He received ten viable offers. He received offers from California and the Midwest. He wanted the new owners to be a family willing to work hard and build a nest egg for their future. I’m happy to tell you there is an offer in process right now! Who thunk it? A little Maine trivia magazine could help sell a business?

September’s warm days and cool nights usher in one of Mainers’ favorite activities! 2025 is going on record as a banner year to enjoy the taste of fresh picked Maine Apples at their peak of their deliciousness!

After a rainy spring, the weather over the summer has cooperated to plump up the juiciest of early Macintosh, Cortland, Honey Crisp, and a variety of heirloom varieties. Apple trees across Maine are getting ready to showcase their bounty and treat us to the sweetest pies, cobbler, apple crisp, applesauce and of course freshly mulled apple cider. Maine orchards offer a range of apple picking experiences. Visit many local orchards to enjoy corn mazes, direct in orchard picking, cornhole, pumpkin picking, or strolling through the sunflower gardens. Having an afternoon adventure in one of Maine’s scenic orchards, results in bushels of delicious apples to take home.

2025 Blistered Fingers Bluegrass Music Festival

The 63rd Blistered Fingers Family Bluegrass Festival is Maine’s Premier Bluegrass Event of the Year! It is located at the Litchfield Fairgrounds in Litchfield Maine. This twice a year festival brings traditional Bluegrass music with the down home flavor. They welcome visitors and musicians alike to this family friendly atmosphere that enriches all who step onto the Blistered Fingers festival grounds.

This year, Greg and Sandy Cormier, the founders and producers of Blistered Fingers Productions, Inc. and members of the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame, worked their magic to bring you Grand Ole Opry stars, and top nationally known artists from throughout New England and across the country. Each day brings a variety of fan-favorite bluegrass musicians, including Maine’s own The Katahdin Valley Boys, Back Woods Road and of course, the host band Blistered Fingers.

Rhonda Vincent & The Rage are members of The Grand Ole Opry. They are highlighting Friday night’s main event along with the Dave Adkins Band from Kentucky and the Seth Sawyer Band from Vermont.

This secure venue offers musicians, and fans alike the opportunity to share on-site camping and evening musical impromptu jamming sessions. The festival grounds are handicap accessible and offer indoor bathroom facilities and free hot showers. A large event tent allows the music to flow rain or shine. Also a large variety of vendors are on site. It’s the perfect venue to come for a day or enjoy the whole week of music, friends and family.

Early bird camping opens Sunday, August 17 at 8am for a small fee of $10 a day Sunday till Wednesday. A one-time electrical hook-up fee of $35 covers your entire stay which is a first come basis. The four-day $100/person weekend pass covers camping and music starting Thursday till Sunday. Children 16 and under are FREE with an accompanying paying adult ticket. Day passes are available as well. Thursday evening 4pm till 9 pm – $25 per person. Friday and Saturday 10 am till 9pm – $40 per person each day.

Blistered Fingers Family Bluegrass festival offers a free Sunday morning gospel sing-a-long and jam to end the festival weekend. Dogs are welcome, but they are not allowed in the concert are. The FREE Kids Academy holds a three-day workshop hosted by Mama Beth Revels and her helpers. 2025 Windsor Fair

The 2025 Windsor Fair Begins A Day Early! Enjoy an extra day of fun!

Saturday, August 23rd, the Windsor Fair opens with a full day of activities. Now showcasing ten spectacular days of down home farm and family hospitality.

Mainers have enjoyed the Windsor Fair experience since1889! Back in the early years, farm families brought their prize crops, cattle, sheep, horses, hand made quilts,and home-made pies to this nine day celebration. They arrived by horse and buggy. Today farmers and families enjoy many of the same aspects of the fair with the 21st century conveniences.

The Windsor Fair’s “Historical Village” showcases working cooper and blacksmith shops, saw mill, and sugar house. You can learn how Maine maple syrup is made. It is well worth the walk down memory lane. The grandkids will be amazed!

The Windsor Fair is Maine’s second largest agricultural fair. They proudly showcase all things summer! You will find youth horse and cattle judging the first weekend, plus a variety of oxen and horse pulls, prize-winning steers, lambs, goats, donkeys, chickens, and everyone’s favorite pig scrambles.

Each day presents a variety of choices to satisfy everyone ‘s interests. You can spend the afternoon in the grandstands watching harness racing, playing beano in the beano hall, or strolling down the giant midway enjoying fair food and rides.

Every evening brings a variety of Maine’s premium entertainment options. Saturday’s opening night highlights Runnin’ Down A Dream – The Tom Petty Tribute Band in the grandstand from 7:30–9:00 pm.

Sunday brings fair favorite demolition derby #1 at 7pm and derby #2 on Thursday evening. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday’s offerings are Maine State truck and tractor pulls at 6:30 each night.

Labor Day weekend begins with a bang. It features the Hurricane Mountain Band on Friday 7:30–9pm, followed by a spectacular fireworks show.

Saturday evening highlights Lexi James & the Wildheart Band at 7:30 in the grandstand.

Sunday offers the Black Cat Hell Drivers Stunt Auto Thrill Show at 7:30 in the Grandstand.

Other Maine bands and entertainment will be scattered throughout the fairgrounds in different venues and times. Please check the daily schedule for all of the many different events across the venue.

Tom Foster, President of the Windsor Fair for the past 32 years, has retired. In December 2024, the Windsor Fair Board of Trustees met and elected Dan Foster the new Windsor Fair President.

Fair organizers feel adding an extra day is one way to increase fair goers pleasure. They love everything agricultural and encourage Maine youth to showcase the love and care of their animals. Their hard work will create confidence and teamwork skills that Maine youngsters will need for future life projects!

In 2023, the first Miss Windsor Fair Apple Queen was crowned. Aaliyah Wright is the 2024 Apple Queen. She has enjoyed her reign with the opportunity to visit other state fairs. She and other members of her court have encouraged new applicants to participate in this year’s contest. The new Apple Queen will be crowned on Thursday, August 28th at 6:00pm on the entertainment stage.

This year’s fair offers fun for everyone in the family! Enjoy the Kora Clowns or the Down East Brass Band as they stroll through the fairgrounds bringing smiles to fair goers.

From June 1st-October 12th the “world-class” Penobscot River can be run for 6-hours. And on only 8 days out of the year folks can raft the Dead River which flows from Flagstaff Lake. All raft trips are guided, with one guide per boat. Rafters are transported by bus to the drop-off sites while staff make jokes, point out beautiful views, and talk about local history (you may or may not learn about hidden treasure still yet to be found). While on the river your guide will instruct you on how to best maneuver the river, give you tips and tricks for class 4 or 5 rapids, stop to offer photo-ops at waterfalls, and offer for you to float once the river calms.

Once back in Bingham, you might notice that their 60-Acres are located right “on” the Maine ATV trail system. Riders may opt to ride toward The Forks, Shirley Mills, Kingsbury, Brighton, or Harmony. In March of 2023, Waterville native and Southern Maine businessman, Greg Theriault, decided to relocate back to the Central Maine area and retire. After a few months, he realized he needed a new project! Greg purchased the Fairfield Laundromat located at 44 Main Street in Fairfield. He thought this scaled down venture would keep him busy and allow him the free time to attend his grandson’s soccer games and ease into retirement.

875 China Road. The sign outside the newly developed space reads Kennebec Roofing Industrial Annex, or “KIA” for short, which might have left you and your family with questions such as, “What is it? Is it open? These are only a couple questions that passers-by ask while viewing the brand new, state of the art, metal building.

Local Winslow natives and current residents, George and Jessica Lint, are the owners and creators of this property. They chose to develop this property as a commitment to bring small business into Winslow while fostering the idea of community spirit. The building consisting of 9 separate rentable units is passion project for George and Jessica. It is named after their daughter, Kierra Ann “Kia” Lint, who passed away unexpectedly two years ago. KIA combines George and Jessica’s visions of offering both professional and recreational spaces to the Winslow community.

Clare Milton Celebrates 10 Years with What About Maine?!

I met Clare in the Winter of 2015 at the McDonald’s on KMD in Waterville. My first impression is that she was a person with a great personality and was very easy to talk to. She was providing elder care services about six nights a week, but was looking for something more. She was bright, hardworking and creative, but as she stated “I don’t really fit into any pigeon holes.” I told her about my magazine, What About Maine, and said that I needed help, especially with sales in the Waterville area. Clare said, “I can to that!” So we gave it a try and went on the road one afternoon. I thought if she can sell one ad, I’ll hire her. Well she sold three ads and the rest as they say is history. Two of the three ads she sold that day are still in the magazine today: Dixon’s Market and B&F Vegetables. What I didn’t know then is that Clare had done this type of work before in the early 70’s when she ran a weekly newspaper called “The Twilighter” that was distributed in the Waterville area. She sold the ads and wrote stories there too.

Clare has been a driving force and an inspirational reservoir since the day she started working at What About Maine. “I LOVE MY JOB!” she says, “I love all my clients and I love helping them get their messages out.” She enjoys telling the stories that no one else is telling. People like to read about local businesses and learn how they work and what makes them successful. Clare has come up with many new ideas for the magazine including, Maine Maple Sunday section, Apple Harvest, Food for You and ME, and “how about we add glossy pages.” Her philosophy is “Let’s give it a try!”

Clare has had many adventures at What About Maine, like visiting a yak farm in Dresden, looking for loons with Captain Gary on the Snow Pond Cruiser, riding in an ATV through the Sugarbush at Raider’s Sugarhouse in China and interviewing Chase and Ryan from Maine Cabin Masters for a featured article.

When Covid hit in 2020, we did not publish a Magazine in April or May of that year, and we had some discussions about whether we would ever publish again. Well, Clare wasn’t having any of that! She doubled her efforts to get things going again and we published in June and have been going strong ever since.

Over the years Clare keeps pushing forward. She loves the friends she has made and is always looking for ways to make the magazine better, including a push on social media that has been taking off in the last few years.

Thank you Clare for all that you do, I really appreciate you and have enjoyed working with you for the last 10 years. What do you think? Should we go for 20?

Nellie’s Italian sub and shaved steak sub served on Damon’s sub rolls are favorites too. You can build your own sandwich with a variety of meats, cheeses, and veggies.

Winslow, Maine is home to a local teenage treasure. She is a 16 year old sophomore at Winslow High School. She is a true renaissance woman. Her creative old soul spirit allows her imagination to flow freely. Bella Ann’s interests are many. She plays varsity high school soccer, softball, and basketball. She is an avid reader. Last year she read 80 books in a variety of genres. Bella believes that helps her create deeper connections to her song writing.

Bella Ann has been writing music since she was 9 years old. Her mom and dad, Meg and Mike Loubier, have their own band so there is always music in the house. She learned to play the ukulele first. She has since added the guitar and piano to her musical repertoire.

Bella credits her small town roots, love of nature, good friends, her parents, two brothers Michael and Gabe, and her grandparents, for her creative confidence, thus allowing her to be vulnerable and let the music flow.

Bella says she is always looking for inspiration in the world around her. She even keeps a list of words and phrases that she will one day turn into brilliant songs.

Bella performs at venues throughout the State and has appeared on Portland’s NBC affiliate TV show “207” and 92 Moose Radio station.

Larry Hillman is the steward of this family business which began in 1960. Larry’s dad, Lawrence Hillman, started making donuts and taking them to work with him. The outpouring from locals encouraged him to purchase their present location. They lived in the house and turned the attached carriage house into the bakery, an enterprise that involved everyone in the family. Larry remembers , he had morning chores to be done before school and lots and lots of dishes and pots and pans to wash after school. Larry attended the University of Maine studying electrical engineering. He made the critical decision to return and move the business forward. Hillman’s Bakery incorporated in the early 1980s.

When asked how he handles the long and early hours, he said he used to come in about 3am. Now with his long-time staff members, others come in about 4am to make the donuts and brew the coffee, so now he doesn’t have to come in until almost 6am. Larry and his family enjoy time at their camp at Indian Pond. Time to relax may be rare but Larry is happy he made the decision to have Sundays and Mondays off each week.

Larry feels blessed to have staff that have been with him for over 30 years. Missi Furbush, Sharon Stowe, and Terri Rogers greet the early morning customers by name. They have their coffee and favorite donuts ready as soon as they come through the door. Everyone works hard and steady all day to create a full range of delicious dinners and desserts, giving families more time together and smiles on their faces.

Another Hillman’s favorite is their made in-house baked beans every Friday! They sell out quickly so put Hillman’s on your Friday to-do list. They make brown bread and homemade yeast rolls to go with supper. Don’t forget the pie too. Hillman’s offers many selections for a cold winter’s night supper. Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce Continues Event Schedule Through Year’s End

The Mid-Maine Chamber is committed to helping the businesses in our region continue to grow and prosper. To that end, the Chamber continues to explore ways to assist members in pushing out marketing messages about their local goods and services through an enhanced schedule of events, sponsorship opportunities, Chamber Chatter videos, Breakfast Spotlighters and more.

Saturday, November 30 will be a day to shop small – while making a BIG difference to the businesses who have been there to support customers throughout the year. It will be a day of fun, with businesses encouraged to put out festive holiday lights and decorations. “A Man on a Mission” is how I would describe entrepreneur, Brock Dostie. He is the creator of his two Maine companies, Dostie’s Towing and Dostie’s Tire Depot.

One visit to “Command Central” at their Benton location and you will find a Brock behind a corner desk with a headphone on, computer screens ready to assist customers finding parts, taking wrecker calls and answering any staff questions. The gleam in his eyes is a true sign of the joy Brock experiences each day of his ever changing businesses.

Dostie’s Towing is located at 46 Bangor Road in Benton, and their newly acquired old Arbo’s location at 126 Drummond Avenue in Waterville. Both service vehicle and truck repair needs. Dostie’s Tire Depot on 218 College Avenue in Waterville provides a full line of new tires, flat repairs, winter tire changeovers, mounting and balancing services. Studded snow tires are now being installed for your winter driving safety.

Brock admitted he was always a car guy! In 2017, the summer following his Lawrence High School graduation in Fairfield, he made a pivotal decision. His future was planned as he was accepted to Maine Maritime Academy to study engineering. He went to work for a local towing company. He saw the need for medium and heavy duty recovery through out Maine.

In January of 2018, Brock purchased his first used tow truck. He found a truck garage on the Bangor Road ready to move right into. This allowed him to do truck repairs and fleet services for local companies. Together with one mechanic they set out to satisfy their customers with state vehicle and truck inspections. They also specialize in commercial truck repairs. All repairs are guaranteed as they are a “Certified Auto Repair Center.”

Brock is proud of the current staff. During the past 7 years, he has handpicked and nourished their skills keeping everyone up to date. Brock would like to thank all the members of his team for their help every day! Everyone pitches in creating a family atmosphere.

Brock’s wife Briannah, daughter Kensley, and son Kashton all help to keep him grounded. Brock said he enjoys all aspects of his business but the challenges of heavy duty towing and recovery really makes him feel like he’s firing on all cylinders!

If you’ve ever watched the reality TV show “Highway Through Hell,” it shows wrecks on the icy roads of Canada needing complicated recoveries. That’s what Brock and his crew does! Brock covers towing challenges anywhere in Maine, including the north woods territory. He had a memorable job last winter. The Forks was the sight of a heartbreaking scene at Martin Pond. During a particularly gnarly storm, a Canadian log truck slid through a guardrail down a steep embankment and into the pond. It was fully submerged. Dostie’s Towing was summoned for the recovery. The entire trailer and its load of logs had to be off-loaded up the embankment while securing the submerged truck, thus allowing the Maine Warden’s Service and the Maine Dive Team with their air boat to complete their grim recovery. This event took several hours. The Somerset County Sheriff’s Department and the Maine State Police also assisted.

Brock has recently added a bright red equipment trailer to hold all their recovery equipment and tools for quick and efficient on sight staging.

2024 Common Ground Country Fair

Looking for a fun, family-friendly event that has “The way Life should be?” written all over it?

The 48th annual Common Ground Fair proudly celebrates Rural Living in MAINE! September 20-21-22, MOFGA (Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association) invites everyone to enjoy their 700 scheduled events. Gates open Friday & Saturday at 9am to 6pm. Sunday 9am to 5pm.

The fair is located at the MOFGA campus in Unity, Maine. Local food vendors will focus on organic Maine grown foods. There will be many vendors joining in the diverse food scene, bringing you bean hole beans served hot from the pot, as well as mouth watering Maine Grains pizzas and so many other delicious treats. Fresh fruits, veggies, ciders, local brews and wines are on display and for sale. This year hundreds of vendors are waiting to share their expertise showcasing handcrafted t-shirts, bags, ceramic pottery, maple products, soaps, honey and many other unique creative ideas. They are truly a unique group of handpicked crafters selected Maine craftsmen ready to demonstrate their skills and offer fabulous items for your Christmas giving.

THIS EVENT DOES NOT OFFER FAIR RIDES! It spotlights the state of Maine for its rural, supportive communities. In place of rides, the Common Ground Fair will challenge your senses in the exhibition hall, yoga tent and a big top fine arts and crafts venues on over 22 acres of the MOFGA campus.

Livestock demonstrations and lots of local animals come together to meet the children. A venue filled with chickens, baby goats, lambs and cows and horses and alpacas. Sheep herding events and Sheep dog trials are always fan favorites!

Take a break from your strolling activities and sit and watch the amazing skills of the area’s border collies performing sophisticated commands while corralling the sheep. Check the schedule for times.

LETS NOT forget the Music!!! This year fair goers will be entertained by some of Maine Premier Performers! The Oshima Brothers will headline the stage on Sunday afternoon. Maine Marimba Ensemble on Saturday and Maine Fiddlers Showcase both Saturday and Sunday.

Area schools plan field trips to the Common Ground Fair each year. It is an opportunity to share MOFGA’s heritage with Maine youth. Our future farmers, future land conservators and future forestry experts will learn how to make a sustainable living and protect our natural resources in Maine.

Parking is available in the surrounding areas. Volunteers and safety personnel will direct traffic. Carpooling is encouraged. Train rides from Thorndike and Unity will be offered via the Belfast Railroad. A round trip ticket and entry to the fair must be purchased together.

The MOFGA website offers more information on parking and transportation options, including signing up for carpooling. Tickets are available in advance until September 18. They are priced as low as $15.00 for adults aged 18–64, $12.00 for youth and elderly 13-17 or 65+, and no cost for those 12 or younger. Those with disabilities are able to access free admission for themselves and 1 guest. Tickets may be purchased at the gate all 3 days for $20.00 per day.

September’s warm days and cool nights usher in one of Mainers’ favorite activities! 2024 is going on record as a banner year to enjoy the taste of fresh picked Maine Apples at their peak of their deliciousness!

This summer, the weather has cooperated to plump up the juiciest of early Macintosh, Cortland, Honey Crisp, and a variety of heirloom varieties. Apple trees across Maine are getting ready to showcase their bounty and treat us to the sweetest pies, cobbler, apple crisp, applesauce and of course freshly mulled apple cider. Maine orchards offer a range of apple picking experiences. Visit many local orchards to enjoy corn mazes, direct in orchard picking, cornhole, pumpkin picking, or strolling through the sunflower gardens. Having an afternoon adventure in one of Maine’s scenic orchards, results in bushels of delicious apples to take home.

Apples are always a favorite in kids’ lunch boxes and desserts. Apple pies, apple crisp, baked apples, or homemade applesauce will bring joy to everyone!

Kennebec Cabin Company

Manchester is home to a real Maine treasure, the Maine Cabin Masters. Located on the corner of Puddle Duck Road on Route # 202, The Maine Cabin Masters acquired the Daggett family homestead. In 2019 Chase Morrill was driving by when he saw the “For Sale” sign. The Maine Cabin Masters were looking for a new home base. Chase quickly placed a call to his friend Tom Daggett. It was an older home with a mother-in-law apartment in the back along with a Woodshed packed with wood. The muddy back lot needed a lot of fill. Chase, Ryan & Ashley put their creative hats on and redesigned the farmhouse. They created an open concept space with raised ceilings and shiplap walls, ideal for displaying Maine made items and Cabin Master swag.

They opened the gift shop (Kennebec Cabin Company) in February 2020 shortly before everything shut down for COVID. The team then pivoted to open the restaurant portion of their project, the Woodshed. They redid the backlot and during the winter of 2020/2021 they constructed smelt shacks. Placing them a safe distance apart allowed them to serve meals to patrons while they enjoyed the fresh Maine air.

The Maine Cabin Masters are contractors who build and remodel cabins throughout the state. Using items that were already there, the crew, and Ashley, designed and repurposed decor in the gift shop and The Woodshed.

Today the Kennebec Cabin Company and The Woodshed attract many visitors from across the country and the world. The popularity of their Magnolia Network show is in it’s 10th year.

Maine Cabin Masters has helped to create interest in Maine for many first timers as well as seasoned visitors alike. The parking lot is scattered with out of state vehicles and locals as well. Try a freshly made lobster roll, or Maine microbrew or wine while taking in a moment to sit back and enjoy good company and local music 3 days a week from June through October.

The Woodshed has indoor and outdoor seating hosting weekly events such as Trivia with the Androscoggin Trivia Company on Tuesdays, Bingo Night on Wednesdays, and Karaoke Night on Thursdays. Once a month they host a “Rock the Dock” concert on their big stage (made out of an actual dock), often bringing in larger acts for ticketed events. The 2024 Windsor Fair begins with an early surprise: the fair Begins A Day Early! Enjoy an extra day of fun!

Saturday, August 24th, the Windsor Fair opens with a full day of activities. Ten Spectacular days of down-home farm and family hospitality bring friends and family together since 1889!

Back in the early years, farm families brought their prize crops, cattle, sheep, horses, hand-made quilts and home-made pies and pickles to this 10 day celebration by horse and buggy.

Today, farmers and families enjoy the many aspects of the fair with the conveniences of the 21st century.

The Windsor Fair Historical Society’s historical village showcases copper and blacksmith shops, a working saw mill, and a working sugar house. You can learn how Maine maple syrup is made. It is well worth the walk down memory lane. The grandkids will be amazed!

The Windsor Fair is Maine’s 2nd largest agricultural fair. They proudly showcase all things summer! You will find 4-H horse and cattle judging, oxen and horse pulls, prize winning steers, lambs, goats, donkeys, chickens and everyone’s favorite pig scrambles.

Each day presents a variety of choices to satisfy everyone ‘s interests. Spend the afternoon in the grandstands watching harness racing, playing beano in the beano hall, or strolling down the giant midway enjoying fair food and rides.

Every evening brings a variety of Maine’s premium entertainment options. Saturday’s “Opening Night” highlights Chase Jobe Band & The Running Kind in the grandstand from 7:30–9:00 pm. Sunday brings fair favorite Demolition Derby #1 at 7pm. Derby #2 is on Thursday evening. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday’s offerings are Maine State Truck and Tractor Pulls at 6:30 each night. The weekend begins with a bang with the Hurricane Mountain Band on Friday 7:30–9:00, followed by a fireworks show. Saturday features the 12OC Band. Sunday offers the RaveX Outer Limits Tour Freestyle Motocross Show. Many other Maine bands and entertainment will be scattered throughout the fairgrounds in many different venues and times. A new contest will be featured on Sunday August 25th the Manure Toss in the Vanner Pulling Ring.

Tom Foster is the long-time Windsor Fair president for the past 31 years. He is the fair’s biggest cheerleader who enjoys keeping the fair moving forward each year. The change of adding an extra day is one he’s wanted to increase for fair goers pleasure. Tom loves everything Agricultural! He is proud to encourage Maine youth to showcase the love and care they have developed with their animals. He believes that it will create confidence and teamwork skills they will need for future life projects!

In 2023, the first Miss Windsor Fair Apple Queen was crowned. Aubrey Schaeffer has enjoyed her reign with the opportunity to visit other state fairs. She and other members of her court have encouraged new applicants to participate in this year’s contest. The new Apple Queen will be crowned on

Children's Book Cellar

The Children’s Book Cellar, a Waterville treasure located at 52 Main Street in downtown Waterville, Maine is on track to close on August 30, 2024. Owner Ellen Richmond has decided to retire after stewarding this venture for 22 years.

Children’s Book Cellar began 1987 with Carol Wynne, filling a need by bringing children’s books to downtown Waterville. Ellen is the 4th owner, with years of experience, having worked at Mr. Paperback from 1978 to 2001.

In January of 2002, Children’s Book Cellar was for sale and likely to close. Jennifer Bergeron and Faye Nicholson, who wanted Children’s Book Cellar to remain a downtown fixture, invited Ellen to come and talk. Ellen was able to work within a short time frame and became the owner in February. She had a new vision for the store. With an understanding of book selling and some practical connections, Ellen increased the offerings for teens and included more adult titles as well.

Ellen says that the “Children’s Book Cellar meets your reading needs from infant through your senior years.” One of her talents is finding whatever titles you are looking for. She is a true “Book Detective!” If you know the title, author, or can even describe the story, Ellen can very often find the book. She enjoys the hunt and the satisfaction of tracking down a title.

One of Ellen’s favorite additions is her Maine book section. Whether it is “Blueberries for Sal” or “Circus Ship,” Ellen makes sure Maine kiddos know all the best Maine stories.

Through the years, Ellen has hosted many book signing events including, Cynthia Lord, Keven Hawks, Chris Van Dusen, Matt Tavares, Hazel Mitchell, Richard Blanco, Amy Calder, and Betty Cully are a few of the Maine authors who have shared their stories at Children’s Book Cellar!

During President Obama’s inauguration in 2013, Richard Blanco, a poet living in Maine, recited his inaugural poem “One Today.” Ellen arranged his reading of it at the Waterville Opera House in December 2015. Ellen has also hosted Drag Queen Story Hours (2019 and 2023) in the store.

Ellen has truly enjoyed getting to know her customers. Many local kids have grown up with Children’s Book Cellar and drop in to say “hi” when they are visiting. Parents and grandparents are regulars. All are friends. That’s one of the regrets of closing the book store which will remain open until the end of August.

The Children’s Book Cellar is on the market and Ellen hopes someone like her, who enjoys reading and sharing books, will consider purchasing the store. She would be on call for any advice they might need. I asked Ellen if she had any retirement plans? She smiled and said she will enjoy some gardening and actually having time to read some of the TBR (To Be Read) stash on her nightstand. Her kitties, Koko and Rosie, will be happy to welcome her home, too. She said she has places to visit and friends to catch up with.

Over the next couple of months please stop in to wish Ellen well and thank her for helping our children “learn to love reading!”

Taste of Waterville: The Fun and Excitement Continues...Save the Date!

Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce’s 32nd annual Taste of Waterville is planned for Wednesday, July 31, from noon to 10 p.m. at the Head of Falls, off Front Street in downtown Waterville. There is no fee for admission and sponsored golf carts are available for free transport to the event from the downtown parking lots.

Taste of Waterville is a day-long event with a variety of food options from dozens of area food trucks, culinary and craft vendor booths, live music, beer/wine gardens, an expanded brew sampling and a dunk tank featuring local officials.

There will be a return of our popular cornhole tournament to add to the excitement, with large cash prizes. Put a team together and register to compete, so simply grab a bite to eat and a drink and watch the competition.

This year’s evening concert opener is the popular band, The Fossils, with our headliner, Stolen Mojo continuing to rock the night away. Downeast Brass, groups from Snow Pond and Colby Arts, as well as several local performers will perform throughout the day.

Additional entertainment and schedules are currently under development. Applications are now being accepted for restaurants, food trucks and food-related vendor participants. Taste of Waterville encourages participation from both Mid-Maine Chamber members and non-members throughout the region. 60th Blistered Fingers Bluegrass Music Festival

June brings the sounds of the “60th Blistered Fingers Family Bluegrass Music Festival” to the Litchfield Fairgrounds in Litchfield, Maine. This twice-a-year festival brings traditional bluegrass music with the down home flavor, welcoming a family-friendly atmosphere that enriches all who step onto the Litchfield Fairgrounds. This secure venue offers musicians and fans alike the opportunity to share on-site camping and evening musical impromptu jamming sessions.

Greg and Sandy Cormier are the festival promoters and Blistered Fingers bluegrass band creators. They are members of the Maine Academy of Country Music and were inducted into the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame.

The Cormiers enlist their entire family to help this four-day event run smoothly. Their daughter Katie handles the gate, check-in services, staff and volunteers. Other family members assist all throughout the festival.

Blistered Fingers Bluegrass Band will be performing at both the June and August shows on Thursday, June 20 and Thursday, August 22 at 6:00pm. This year Greg and Sandy will be celebrating their 43rd wedding Anniversary on June 20 on stage surrounded by their family and friends!

Each event features Grand Ole Opry performers, east coast bands, and showcases Maine’s favorite bluegrass bands. Some of the headliners are The Gibson Brothers (NY), Country Gentlemen Tribute Band (MD), Hemingway Brothers (ME), The Katahdin Valley Boys (ME), and fan favorite Nothin’ Fancy (VA), just to name a few.

The Kid’s Academy holds a thrill-day workshop hosted by Mama Beth Revels who helps instruct youngsters with Musical ambitions to work together to perform their own concert on Saturday afternoon of each festival. Youngsters with a wide variety of skills come together, beginners are always welcomed! Each child will receive a FREE Kid’s Academy shirt to wear during their performance.

Advanced tickets for the four-day event are $95 if purchased before June 1st, then $100 at the gate. Day tickets are $25 each on Thursday (4pm–9pm) and $40 each per day for Friday and Saturday (10am–9pm). Sunday is free for the Gospel Sing and Jam service (10am–11am). Kids under 16 are free with a paying adult.

Campsites open at 8:00am Sunday June 16. The fee is only $10/day (Sunday-Wed) for Early Bird camping. Camping is FREE with Weekend tickets (Thurs-Sunday). Electrical hookups are only $35 for your entire stay. Not per day. Golf carts rides to and from the parking area to the stage area are available if needed.

Jen and Brady Chapman are beginning their 18th season of welcoming friends and patrons to “Snack Shack” – A Skowhegan landmark on Rt. 201. Perfect for a stop whether you are heading north or south.

Snack Shack is a family business run by Jen, Brady, and their 4 sons (Jake, Zac, and twins Chase and Wyatt). Each member lends their skills to collectively work together and meet the needs of customers.

Customers enjoy eating in their classic car themed dining room. There are lots of Maine themed items to look at. Looking to enjoy the nice weather and a summer breeze, Snack Shack has the perfect place to relax outdoors with a selection of outdoor picnic tables. “Off Menu Specials!” such as American Chop Suey or Chicken Croquettes are announced as Daily Specials on their Facebook page.

Unity Flower Shop

Unity Flower Shop is celebrating far more than 45 years of business this year. With Mother’s Day (May 12th) right around the corner, it would only make sense to acknowledge the woman who started it all, Nacie, who’s birthday is on April 13th.

With a growing family at home and a chance opportunity, Nacie was able to open Nacie’s What Nots on their country porch. The shop was busier than they could have ever expected. One year Nacie sent her husband, Gene, to Bangor many times on Valentines Day because they kept selling out!

Somewhere along the line, they rebranded to Country Green Florist after their handmade sign was stolen. In the years to come “Country” became a popular name for florists and shops would often get orders meant for other businesses. A vendor proposed the question, “How many Unity’s are there in Maine?” and the name changed to Unity Flower Shop. Through all three name changes the business continued to grow, Gene even gave up the garage to make more space.

Najean Shedyak, now owner and daughter of Nacie, learned a lot from her mom. From a young age she was responsible for filling water and rolling ribbon. When she was older she helped with arrangements and deliveries. At 18 years old Najean placed 2nd in the Maine State Florists’ and Growers’ Association, something that couldn’t have been achieved without the many things she learned from her mom. However, making beautiful arrangements was not the only skill that Najean learned from her mom.

One of the most important roles of a florist is the act of listening. Something that seems far easier than it actually is. Najean states, “I learned about the community through all of the most intimate moments. Sometimes I am the first to learn of things… births, weddings, and death.” Najean was most worried about the latter. After confiding in her mom about this she learned that “you talk about flowers in a way that embraces the loved ones who have passed.” A lesson reflected in her work.

This year Unity Flower Shop will be working with a local family who plans to grow flowers for the shop. In the next ten years Najean has plans to expand to a larger area with more green houses and raised beds.

The Landing

You know spring has truly sprung in Central Maine when you find yourself gathering your family and friends for a trip out to China Lake, and no trip out would be complete without a stop at The Landing restaurant nestled picturesquely at the head of the lake.

All winter long, locals drive by on route 202 in China anxiously waiting to see the opening date posted to front road sign. This year’s opening date will be Friday, April 5, 2024.

When you stop into The Landing, you’re sure to find yourself smiling as you’re transported back to simpler times when roadside takeout stands offered friendly service, and tasty treats at a fair price. As you pull up to red-roofed building, you’ll find families filling the parking lot, and boats tied up to the docks out front, all waiting to enjoying a meal or a refreshing ice cream. This year, thanks to an extremely early ice-out, The Landing‘s docks are already out, and awaiting their first dock-and-dine customers.

Tory and Kim Stark are embarking on their 3rd season as the owners of The Landing. They are a young family with five growing children. Kim is the coordinating force to get all the jobs done and carve out some family time, too. I asked Tory what his job at The Landing was. He said he mainly takes care of the grounds and managing the new IT ordering system, but chuckled and added, “I mostly do whatever Kim tells me to do!”

The Landing is known for several signature recipes. These traditional dishes have been passed down through the years and were included in part of the sale of the business. “One of our top priorities was to preserve the traditions that so many customers return to the lake each summer to experience”, Kim noted regarding changes after the 2022 sale.

The Landing has been known for years for their Chicken Baskets and hand-dipped Onion Rings. It’s the secret coatings and batter recipes that keep customers coming back all summer, and for which the Starks have been sworn to secrecy. Last year alone, The Landing sold around 10,000 Chicken Baskets between April and September!

Another investment was the upgrading of their pizza oven. Now, in addition to other items on the large menu, quicker, fresh dough and gluten free crust options are available with your favorite toppings.

Kim keeps a watchful eye on all aspects of the business. She is the chief “Quality Control Officer.” She coaches the staff to make the perfect milkshake, ice cream cones and dinner entrees. Tory said the whole staff is like an extended family. Some staff come back year after year.

The Landing is blessed with the perfect location. Not only is it lakeside, but it’s just a stone’s throw away from Waterville and Augusta, as well as at the intersection of a busy ATV trail and public boat launch.

Though from the outside The Landing has preserved the quaintness of days gone by, they’ve made the leap into the 21st century in many ways. Maine Maple Sunday Weekend 2024 – The Tradition Continues

March 23rd & 24th 2024 welcomes “Maine Maple Sunday Weekend ™” to Sugar houses across Maine. The Maine Maple Producers Association members begin their season as soon as the first drop of sap drips from any sugar maple tree in their sugar bush. All hands are on deck when “The Boil Begins.”

Maple Season is a collaboration between mother nature and the hard working Mainers who put their lives on hold for about two months every spring. Producing that sweet, rich, Maple syrup that stays on taste buds year round. The first few drops are sure to say,“Spring in Maine has Arrived!”

The process begins in mid-winter as sugarmakers venture into their sugarbush with their dogs and family members in tow. Together they cut hundreds of cords of wood, assemble miles of tubing and taps that will collect the running sap come warmer temps. This tradition has been passed down from many generations. Many sugar makers, large and small, rely on family and friends to make the syrup each spring.

The Bacon Farm is the 6th working generation of sugarmakers. They've been making Maple syrup for 143 years in Sidney Maine. Each family has their own special traditions. Kevin and Shelley's son Nathan lights the first fire and tastes the first syrup coming out of the evaporator. Paul and Sherry Wilson gather their family and give the honors to one of their children to tap the first tree of the season. John and Lisa Lee planted 12 sugar maples to stand guard over their Sugar house the year they moved to their Jefferson home. Today, only one remains that honors Lee's Maple sugaring journey all these years. Doug and Gail Tibbetts host an Easter Egg Hunt every year. Martin Woods had pony and sleigh rides and served ice cream with Maple syrup on top. Blais Maple makes maple cream and maple taffy to hand out to his guests. You will find individual activities and treats at each Sugarhouse. So plan to visit several over the 2 day festival.

It is fun for the whole family! This year as the “Tradition Continues” Maine Maple syrup producers yearn to see the steam from the sugarhouse evaporator streaking skyward as the sweet maple aroma announces that the “Maine Maple Season” is in full swing.

“Have a Sweet Day!” is a salutation and philosophy at Incense and Peppermint Candy & Gifts. Owners Malcolm Porter and David Spinney-Porter sweetly welcome every person who enters their iconic retro candy shop located at 48 Main Street in downtown Waterville.

Malcolm and David wear the classic white dress shirt, red suspenders and bowtie, black slacks, and shopkeeper’s apron to highlight the traditional role candy makers have played while keeping our perpetual sweet tooth happy.

You will be transported into a time gone by with candy themed tunes that fill the shop on the lower end of Main Street. Don’t be surprised if you see Malcolm dressed like Willy Wonka behind the counter shouting out a quick, “Welcome to Incense and Peppermints!” You might also find “Peppermint Patty,” portrayed by Sheila Carver, in the shop. She is their spokesmodel and features the “candy of the day” on their Facebook page and social media.

Malcolm is a “Certified Chocolatier,” making an assortment of custom chocolate creations. Recently he made a 9lb truffle for a private event. They make “Fresh Made Fudge” in store multiple times a week. Customer favorites include peanut butter fudge, chocolate peanut butter, orange-cream swirl, chocolate mint, penuche, and even divinity upon occasion. They usually have up to 14 varieties of fudge daily.

Enjoy one of the largest selections of “Jelly Belly” jelly beans in the state with 72 different flavors. Jars of old fashioned loose “penny candies” are available. Try their freeze dried candy made in-house with many flavors to choose from. Life Savers and other assorted hard candies along with your favorite candy bars will bring your taste buds back to your childhood.

Easter is one of Incense and Peppermints’ favorite holidays and they are already stocked up with all of your favorite traditional candies to fill your Easter baskets. Choices include Peeps, chocolate bunnies, Choco-Chicks – hand dipped Chocolate Peeps, and Dyno-Surprise Eggs. Joe’s Flat Iron Café is downtown Skowhegan’s newest coffee spot. Inside the old Paper Clip venue, at 65 Water Street, you will be greeted by friendly staff as you are welcomed into the calming environment.

Joe Almand, an eight-year veteran firefighter and paramedic at the Skowhegan Fire Department, needed a challenge after a serious injury in 2022. This life-changing accident left him questioning what he could do to continue serving the community he loved so much. After some research, he decided a local café was the way to go. He negotiated the space and then the real work began. Eight months of hard work for Joe and his crew led to the revitalization of this downtown staple. Joe’s Flat Iron Café opened on July 23rd, 2023.

Joe chose an eclectic and casual decor for the space. The walls are a relaxing “Revel Blue” by Sherwin Williams. Joe’s is the perfect space to work remotely. A quiet setting with strong wifi that allows customers to grab a coffee for their online meeting. The day I visited a young woman was silently working with her earbuds in, at a back table. This smart, independent, 20 something, professional, Sikwani Dana, was happily attending a zoom meeting. She works for “Niweskok” a non-profit company designing educational content about the Wabanaki community. She enjoys the friendly atmosphere that Joe’s offers.

Joe promotes local Maine companies such as “Coffee By Design” out of Portland and “Carrabassett Coffee” who offer specialty blends from Kingfield, as well as many others. Joe hasn’t forgotten about his devout tea drinkers; and serves an equally impressive local line-up from the “Bar Harbor Tea Company.” Flavors can be served up hot or cold.

Future plans for Joe’s Flat Iron Café include growing his menu with more soups, including Taco Tuesdays, and offering new desserts. A mere one-and-a-half-hour drive from Waterville, Maine filled with beautiful mountain views, rocky riverbeds, and beautiful small towns will lead you to The Looney Moose Café. Wreaths Across America: Doing Our Part

December 16, 2023 was the day to honor our veterans in National Veterans Cemeteries around the world. Wreaths Across America workers, volunteers, veterans, boy scouts, civil air patrol, veterans organizations, and everyday citizens got up early to lay wreaths. Most braved the cold to make their way to Arlington and other veterans’ cemeteries to honor those who have kept America safe.

I must admit that while doing this story, I was really looking forward to seeing this process in action. Our team met early that cold Saturday morning to make our way to Augusta’s Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery. We arrived at about 10:15 and followed other vehicles making their way to the top of the hill where the monuments stood silently and the flags waved briskly in the cold wind.

Boxes of wreaths were being distributed to different areas of the cemetery ready to be laid. An 11:00 am service was ready to begin. Several hundred Mainers stood silently waiting for the American flag to be presented and the pledge of allegiance to be recited. A “godwink” moment accrued. Suddenly, we all looked up. Just above our heads was a stunning Bald Eagle gliding silently over the hilltop. It was breathtaking and gone all too soon. The crowd let out a collective sigh. The perfect patriotic moment to begin the service.

After the program was concluded, the crowd fanned out to begin honoring those resting here. My nephew, Scott, who is a veteran, and his wife,Tina, whose parents, Joseph and Inga Bourgoin rest here, participated for the first time. Joseph was a WWII and Korean War veteran and prisoner of war survivor. Tina got to place wreaths on their graves and say their names. It was very moving! We will be highlighting her parents’ story in the future.

We were handed several wreaths and began our mission to honor our soldiers. It didn’t take long for each section to be decorated. A rewarding adventure to honor those who gave so much! The laying of the wreaths that everyone worked so hard to make and transport really completed “Wreaths Across America‘s” mission to: Remember, Honor, and Teach a reality.

Thank you to Karen, Renee, Amber and all of the staff and volunteers who helped our What About Maine? staff feel welcomed and gave us access to the stories so many were willing to share. It may have been our first experience, but surely won’t be our last. We are very grateful for this experience! Telling the “Maine Journey!” is what we are all about. We feel blessed to tell just a few of the many stories. We gathered a lot of content and will be highlighting some of these personal journeys in the months to come. We will also profile some of them on our Facebook page as well. Please check our site for new entries.

Wreaths Across America: The Interviews

At 91 years old, Nancy Willey works as a Museum Tour Guide at the Wreaths Across America Museum in Columbia Falls, Maine. She has held this position for nearly ten years, after she was asked by the Worcster family. Nancy had previously taught Karen and Morril while they were in high school and later homeschooled their two youngest daughters. After the girls had graduated Karen and Morril thought she would be great working in the museum. “I came here because most of my friends had passed away. I was always an active person in the community and this was an excellent place to keep contributing and giving back.”

Nancy has previously joined the convoy to Arlington National Cemetery to lay wreaths, and while she no longer participates in that leg of the journey she is an active member of the Maine portion of Wreaths Across America. Nancy takes part in many events with Wreaths Across America such as banquets, special programming, and of course daily tours for visitors and Gold Star Families.

When asked about what she wants Mainer’s to know she replied with a smile and tear in her eye, “I think, if possible, any Mainer who can come to Columbia Falls to the museum should come and find out about true stories of service members and their families, and how we got our start.”

Nancy said, “I have a lot of families who come through here. I ask each kid if they salute the flag. Most do. Some don’t. It bothers me. That flag means so much. It’s for those who have served and the lives that were lost fighting for that flag… I think more kids today should know that is what it represents.”

Nancy can be found giving tours at the Wreaths Across America Museum at: 4 Point Street, Columbia Falls, Maine 04623 most days of the week. She will greet you at the door and offer you a tour with a smile on her face. The stories she shares and the passion she has will fill your heart and bring a tear to your eye as well. Ed Farnsworth of Ellsworth was seen standing against one of two fire trucks with ladders extended, each holding one side of the American flag as it swayed in the morning air. He was at the Ellsworth YMCA the first morning of the convoy. This is his 13th year supporting the Wreaths Across America.

Ed says that he keeps coming back each year because, “it’s a worthwhile cause with a lot of tradition. This is a special event. Most people are lucky if they see it once or twice. The amount of support keeps growing over the years. It’s impressive to see how many [national and local] companies donate their trucks, drivers, time, money, and supplies to make this work.” Ed added that having this organization based in the state of Maine is “impressive,” and shows the rest of the nation just how much we listen to the voices of our veterans. –ST

Michael Deede, 51 of Texas was seen standing with a group of fellow truck drivers at the Ellsworth YMCA. Michael was chosen 8 years ago by his company to take part in the Wreaths Across America convoy. He keeps coming back each year noting, “It’s an honor to participate.”

Michaels favorite part of the convoy is, “everyone coming out and supporting us.” He notes that the travel to Maine each year is, “an experience… everyone along the way and everyone up here is friendly.” Something that could be said about himself as he was the first of the truck drivers to volunteer for an interview.

Michael’s grandfather served in the Air Force for 40 years, making his ties to this mission even stronger. Michael says the one thing he wants to leave with readers is, “to never forget.” Something that he didn’t expand upon, because it simply doesn’t need to be. –ST

Bob Beske of Castine, Maine was a first year participant in the Wreaths Across America Convoy. Bob had been watching the convoy for several years and wanted to do a ride in the trucks as he had never been in a semi before and thought it would be fun. This year while getting his car fixed he had seen a Wreaths Across America vehicle in the shop and told the workers about how much he wanted to take part in the trek.

The shop passed along his name and contact information and a little while later he heard back. He was going to be able to take part in the first portion of the Convoy with Truck Driver Seth Ennis of Indiana. Together they will ride from Columbia Falls to Belfast, Maine making a few stops along the way and admiring the lines of local residents who sit at the ends of their driveways waving flags and beeping their horns as the convoy passes.

Bob and his wife were asked if they would be willing to volunteer as tour guides at the museum and agreed. He says, “it was a good experience, there were so many generous and grateful people and so many tears too.” He noted that one of things he plans to share with others about his experience is how great it can be to “just step up and volunteer.” Being a Maine resident he says, “it really makes you proud. This is a great industry and there seems to be a lot involved [in it].”

Bob jokingly said, “I’ve rode in the truck but I haven’t been allowed to drive the truck yet!” When asked if he would ever go for his CDL in order to take part in the full convoy he said, “I’m very retired so no CDL is in my future… The tour job is just enough for me!” Although it was his first year, Bob plans to keep active stating, “the people, the drivers, everything, it’s all so wonderful.” –ST

Two year Navy Veteran, Seth Ennis of Indiana is in his 3rd year of driving truck for the Wreaths Across America. Seth is one of 50 or so veterans in his family and takes this job as one of his most serious deliveries of the year.

Seth’s friend had previously volunteered as a truck driver with Wreaths Across America and had reached out to tell him about the experience. Seth said from the moment he heard about the mission he knew it was something he wanted to partake in. For a few years Seth tried to get involved, some of his experiences with the Convoy happened during the Pandemic.

Seth was worried he wouldn’t be able to participate this year as sickness had hit his house and he and his family were faced with other struggles. He said, “this experience means so much to me, that it would take an act of God to stop me from coming here.” A sentiment that could be said the same about how he was able to participate this year. The folks of Wreaths Across America reached out to support him and ensure that he was able to take part in this year’s convoy.

When asked about today’s events Seth said, “You don’t find comradery with stranger’s like this anywhere else. When we are here, we aren’t strangers, we’re friends you just haven’t met yet. It really adds a whole other layer to our service history.”

As an out-of-stater Seth described his 1,350 mile journey to Maine as, “an experience… I make excuses to come back to the state all year round. The patriotism here is unmatched.”

Seth brings home a case of wreaths each year for the headstones of his family members who have passed. He notes that Wreaths Across America doesn’t yet stop in his hometown. He visits the cemeteries often, and has the opportunity to lay a Maine Made wreath on his family’s graves while saying their names out loud, not once but twice, because he is a strong believer in someone dying twice; once when they pass away, and again when their name is spoken for the last time.

Wreaths Across America: The Journey Begins

The weekend of December 8–10, 2023 marked the gathering in the little town of Columbia Falls, Maine – a town that brings Christmas cheer and fresh balsam wreaths to families and veterans cemeteries across the country.

The What About Maine staff had the opportunity to interview participating members of the convoy heading south to Arlington. We attended a dinner at Narraguagus High School in Harrington, a send-off event to honor all those involved, especially the truckers! Truckers had been working for over a month delivering Wreaths Across America, most of whom would be in the 68 vehicle convoy to Arlington. Before dinner was served all of the drivers lined up and waited their turn to say their names and towns they live in, the companies they work for, their military affiliations and where they had delivered loads of wreaths. It was an amazing experience to hear the diversity of all involved.

Our crew spent the night in Ellsworth, assuring we would be ready to interview as many folks as possible at the convoy’s first stop at the YMCA in downtown Ellsworth. The day actually began before dawn when the Worcester family, staff and board members had a wreath presentation at the West Quoddy Head Light in Lubec at first light. Then off to the Canadian border crossing to exchange ceremonial wreaths with their Canadian counterparts, and back to Columbia Falls for the kickoff of the convoy.

Mainers lined the roadsides with their families in tow to honk and wave them on their way.

In Ellsworth, the sounds of sirens foretold the coming of the convoy. Main Street was lined with well-wishers. Some had been there every year and others were enjoying their first experience. We were able to capture some of their stories.

After a program in the YMCA, they moved on to Belfast, Gardiner, and ended their day in Portland. Monday, after a stop in York, Gold Star Families, military, police and security team, bus loads of volunteers, staff and all the wreath-filled trucks crossed the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge. They left Maine behind but carried with them the hopes and prayers of all Mainers to represent us by Remembering, Honoring and Teaching everyone the power of laying a wreath.

Wreaths Across America – The Maine Journey Begins!

Starting in December 2023, What About Maine? is undertaking a new multi-month feature. We will be sharing the mission of an outstanding non-profit organization located in our home state of Maine. In January 2024, What About Maine? will begin telling stories about this truly blessed operation, Wreaths Across America, who is on a self-described mission to use handmade wreaths to “Remember - Honor - Teach!”

Wreaths Across America wants to teach all of us about the service and sacrifice our veterans have made from the Revolutionary war to today. Our veterans and active-duty members do so much to keep us safe and Wreaths Across America want to remind us that “FREEDOM IS NOT FREE!”

There are U.S. veterans laid to rest in all 50 states, as well as Puerto-Rico and Guam. Each year headstones across these cemeteries are adorned with handmade, fresh balsam, wreaths and red bows. On December 16, 2023 millions of volunteers, current and retired military, and the families of fallen service members, plan to pay tribute by participating in this “National Wreaths Across America Day.” Wreaths will be laid on headstones across the world while each service member’s name is read aloud, paying tribute to each life. The selfless sacrifice of each veteran is recognized and acknowledged year after year.

The weekend of December 9th and 10th is an exciting weekend for Columbia Falls, Maine! It is the weekend everyone gathers, bringing together Gold Star families, veterans and their families, friends, truckers, Wreaths Across America staff, and volunteers. Everyone is preparing for the annual trek to Arlington National Cemetery. This annual gathering serves as a chance to ground everyone before setting out on a great mission.

The mission of Wreaths Across America is to Remember the fallen, Honor those who serve, and Teach the next generation the value of freedom. It is a national nonprofit that was established in 2007. It was grown from a family tradition which began in 1992 when the first 5,000 wreaths were laid in the oldest section of Arlington National Cemetery, a section which at that time didn’t see many visitors. Volunteers couldn’t help but say the name of each soldier while laying a wreath on their grave. The vocalization of each service member’s name hit home and is a tradition carried through to today in an attempt to make sure no serviceman is forgotten. In 2023 sponsored veterans’ wreaths will be placed by volunteers in more than 4,100 participating locations nationwide.

What About Maine? is honored to be able to join the gathering in Columbia Falls this year. Our team will work together to write stories of a wide variety of Mainers and guests. We will experience the kick-off event and possibly ride in the first leg of the convoy. We will also be taking video to use on our social media platforms. Members of our team will have an opportunity to lay wreaths in a Maine Veterans Cemetery on December 16th, a moment to truly experience and honor Maine Veterans who have sacrificed all to keep us free! Our January 2024 issue will be dedicated to Wreaths Across America and “The Maine Journey!” We would personally like to thank the Wreaths Across America Staff and Volunteers who made our November visit possible.

We recently got to meet founders, Morrill and Karen Worcester, and their daughter-in-law Renee Worcester, who also serves as a volunteer for the nonprofit. We spent the day learning and experiencing their mission. We received a personal tour of the museum and restored guest house where each room is designed to showcase a different wartime era as if the soldier just walked out the door to begin his military service. The whole day was a truly a moving experience.

Karen Worcester, who has been the volunteer Executive Director for the nonprofit since its founding, took time out of her busy schedule to give us a personal interview and guided tour along with a longtime volunteer, driver, and personal assistant Dave. He and Karen conducted a grand tour of the thousands of stunning acres of Balsam trees and individual monuments located on the “tip lands” where balsam is harvested to make veterans’ wreaths. Across the ridge line, a picturesque silhouette of an old-fashioned Maine chapel dotted the sunset. The chapel was designed and built by the Worcester family to provide a peaceful place where visitors and locals can rest and reflect on the beauty of this land and the lives loved and lost. The chapel hosts weddings and funerals and military remembrances with Saturday services.

Veterans are honored in many ways by the Worcester family, the most jaw dropping of all is the placement of replica Dog Tags on a balsam tree bow. Each Dog Tag is kept track of, and families are notified every three years when tips from their loved ones tree will be harvested. It would be hard to ignore the love, detail, and intention behind everything that the Worcester family does. You truly feel a part of each serviceman is present, respected, and honored in so many different ways.

Worcester Wreath Company – Honoring Our Veterans

Worcester Wreath Company is a true Maine treasure with its roots firmly planted in Downeast Maine, dedicated to bringing you the joy of the holiday season. We traveled to Columbia Falls, over a two-hour drive from Waterville, Maine, to learn their story and witness the phenomenal tree to wreath process.

Morrill Worcester, the company’s founder, is a true Mainer! A gentle soul whose love for Christmas and strong work ethic gave him an idea to create locally grown, fresh balsam tip wreaths. As a young man he handmade his wreaths and sold them at a roadside stand. Mainer’s and visitors alike enjoyed the fresh balsam fragrance and full green tips that complement one another, making each wreath a work of art! The Worcester Wreath Company grew their business by directly shipping their wreaths to customers through catalog sales companies.

In 1992 at the end of their wreath making season, they had 5,000 wreaths left over. Morrill did not want to discard them and instead decided to donate them to the fallen veterans at Arlington National Veterans Cemetery. Morrill’s wife, Karen, put her people skills to work and contacted folks at Arlington National Veterans Cemetery. The answer was an astounding “YES!” and thus “The Worcester Wreaths” convoy to Arlington was born! They loaded the wreaths up and convinced family and friends to join them on the trek to Arlington. Upon arrival, they were escorted to the oldest section of the cemetery. They were told it was a section that didn’t receive many visitors.

There is a saying that “Everyone dies twice! Once when you physically pass away and a second when no one’s left to say your name.” That’s how the section was chosen. When the wreaths were laid, each serviceman’s name was spoken aloud, a mission that continues to this day. Since then, the mission has grown every year, information we will share through the story of “Wreaths Across America.”

Worcester Wreath Company could easily be confused for a seasonal business, however it is year-round. Morrill worked with paper companies to purchase land that had been recently harvested, leaving behind only fir trees. Worcester’s foresters manage the thousands of acres to assure their balsam fir trees are healthy, disease free, and sustainably harvested. A science for maintaining and harvesting balsam tips was created and continues to be practiced.

Another way Worcester Wreath Company serves their community is by keeping their employees all year round despite being a seasonal business. In the off season, wreath makers handmake all the bows that adorn their wreaths. This year, they made over 2 million bows! Several sites accommodate the 24/7 wreath-making work force and the hundreds of truckers who deliver wreaths across the country and beyond.

Christmas joy and American pride come together in this beautiful Downeast town of Columbia Falls. The unexpected and unintended impact of the Worcester Wreath Factory continues to grow like the balsam firs that endlessly provide a symbol of appreciation year after year.

The story of Joseph’s Market is 98 years in the making. A history made at 74 Front Street, originally the heart of the Lebanese Community, in downtown Waterville, Maine. A story which continues today. The new Owners, Danny and Kaitlin McKinnis, husband and wife, have years of local customer service experience.

Danny brings his master meat cutting skills, having been crafted starting at the old China General Store, working under Jack Sylvester for eighteen years, until the store changed hands. He then moved on to join the Joseph’s Market family in 2003, followed by Kaitlin in mid 2015, passing on his skills and knowledge, under the watchful eye of Kevin and Diane Joseph. Kevin taught many aspects of the business. “Service & Quality,” loyalty, knowing your customers names and their favorite cuts of meat, creating a personal touch for new and old relationships to prosper.

Joseph’s Market is an iconic landmark on Front Street in Waterville. The names are synonymous. Front Street is now two-way, which makes access to the market far easier. Entering the store invokes childhood memories for many. The moment you grip the sturdy handrail and step up onto the newly formed concrete steps and enter through the left side glass door, you feel like you are home – a timeless atmosphere.

Small businesses are the heartbeat of the area. This year, Mid-Maine Chamber will be working once again to enhance the holiday season for area businesses, focusing on their unique, local flavor.

Saturday, November 25 will be a day to shop small – while making a BIG difference to the businesses who have been there to support customers throughout the year. It will be a day of fun, with businesses encouraged to put out festive holiday lights and decorations. Participating businesses will have coupon books filled with savings, shopping bags to collect goodies, and chances to win a $100 Chamber gift certificate good at nearly 200 area businesses. Most coupons are valid prior and post-event to ensure that you have time to utilize them.

Mix 107.9 will be doing live remotes throughout the area and businesses are encouraged to give shoppers a reason to shop locally. So, grab your friends and family, and head on out for a day of enjoyment in the great outdoors. Stay tuned for additional information as the date gets closer.

Celebrating What About Maine's 12th Anniversary This Month

October 18, 2023 Celebrates What About Maine? 12th Anniversary. This year has seen many exciting changes. In April we found a new Maine printing company that could print both glossy and the whitest newsprint available. This allowed us to upgrade our magazine to include four glossy pages including the front and back covers. This one change has helped us increase our circulation territory. We are now serving communities from Bingham, Unity, North Anson, Topsham, the entire Kennebec Valley and over to the Turner area. We are distributing 6,000 copies on the first Friday of each month.

Along with our new look, we have upgraded our website www.WhatAboutMaine.com. Kristina Roderick of Imagine Design Company has been our graphic designer for seven years. Recently, she has developed our new website to include an easier way to answer the questions and enter our monthly gift card contests. The entire magazine runs online, uploaded the same day the magazine hits newsstands. So you could experience What About Maine? Trivia Magazine from anywhere in the WORLD. This fact alone has brought readers from other states as well as more locals.

In recent months we have added and updated several additional features. Duane has developed our “Community Calendar” that is designed to showcase what’s happening in Central Maine. The calendar is sponsored by the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce. Readers have told us they keep this page open all month ready-to choose their favorite local activities.

“Food for You and Me” debuted in December of 2022, a collaboration between Danielle Sylvester, owner of Bee’s in Winslow, and our own, Clare Milton. This page designed to highlight authentic Maine Recipes. Danielle sponsors a $25.00 gift card to Bee’s for a meal on her. All you have to do to enter the contest is email a recipe to: claremilton137@gmail.com or stop into Bee’s at 1 Lithgow Street in Winslow and drop off your recipes. They serve breakfast all day and offer original daily special creations by Danielle.

What About Maine? is excited to bring you more challenging Maine trivia questions, new features and expanding territories in the months ahead. Marty Allen, our Publisher and Chief Question Curator ,began this journey 12 years ago. He was a one-person whirlwind at the time. He curated all the questions, published the magazine and distributed each new issue. Thank you, Marty! 2023 has brought us two new “20 somethings” to our staff. Samantha Turner is our Social Media & Communications Manager and Ian Winter is the newest addition to our Sales and Marketing department. Gardiner Main Street's Swine & Stein Brew Fest

Gardiner Main Street’s “Swine & Stein Brewfest” has become an October annual tradition in downtown Gardiner. A festive party in the street, the event features tasting of craft beverages, a celebration of all things pork, fun games, and live bands, all with a backdrop of Gardiner’s historical Water Street buildings.

VIP and General Admission tickets include all day samples from a selection of our local Maine craft beverages, including beer, cider, mead, wine, bourbon, and kombucha. Local favorites include Bateau Brewing, Run Amok Mead, and Chadwick’s Craft Spirits, as well as established and emerging brewers from the region, 21 pourers in all, each with multiple options to sample.

Johnson Hall’s Artistic Director, Mike Miclon, will emcee the musical entertainment, starting off with The Scolded Dogs, followed by The Shakes, and topped off by Gardiner’s own Astroplanet. The entertainment gets interactive with corn hole, pass the pigs, and giant Jenga available for self-directed games, and competitive with rock, paper, scissors, frozen t-shirt, and Beard and Mustache competitions.

Food options will include food trucks in the street and Gardiner’s own restaurants providing a variety of options including pork specialties, pizza, burritos, pretzels, hot dogs, cheesecake, and much more!

A day looked forward to by many, proceeds from tickets to Swine and Stein supports Gardiner Main Street’s mission to grow and sustain our local downtown economy while engaging and supporting our history and community. Common Ground Country Fair

September’s warm days and cool nights welcome the 47th annual Common Ground Country Fair to the MOFGA (Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association) campus in Unity, Maine. The days of September 22nd, 23rd, and 24th celebrate rural living in Maine with something for everyone in the family.

A total of 50 food vendors that focus on organic and Maine foods will be in attendance this year, with 17 NEW vendors joining the diverse food scene. Bean Hole Beans will be dished for interested fair goers along with mouth-watering pizza made with Maine grains. A variety of other delicious treats, fresh fruits, and ciders will help you relax and enjoy the many exhibits the Fair has to offer.

The event does not have fair rides, rather it spotlights the state of Maine for its rural, supportive communities. In place of rides you will find the Exhibition Hall, Yoga Tent, big top Fine Arts and Crafts tent, Livestock demonstrations, a Sheep Herding event, and a Green Living and DIY Home Hack area. The Arts and Crafts vendors include hundreds of artisans that are hand-picked based on skill, quality, and use of Maine’s natural resources.

An exciting lineup of seminars, workshops, and keynote speakers will commence on day one and include 630 educational talks during the course of its 3 days. Amongst the speakers is Ryan Parker, a member of “Full Plate Full Potential and Maine School Garden Network.”

Maine music will be represented at its best with live music performances. Noel Paul Stookey, Dave Mallett, Tim Sample, Mehlman, Hambone and Sara Trunzo, and the Waterville High School Orchestra are some of the 80 musical events scheduled for 2023.

Parking is available in the surrounding areas and fields where volunteers and local safety personnel will direct traffic and aid in parking, and carpooling is encouraged. Train rides from Thorndike and Unity will be offered via the Belfast Railroad. A round trip ticket and entry to the fair must be purchased. The website offers more information on parking and transportation options, including signing up to participate in carpooling.

Tickets are available in advance until September 21st and are priced as follows: $15 for adults aged 18-64, $12 for youth and elderly aged 13-17 or 65+, and no-cost for those 12 and younger. Those with a disability are able to access free admission for themselves and one guest. Tickets can be purchased at the gate all 3 days at a cost of $20.

Maine Apple Sunday

This year, September brings together an end to a very odd season for apple farmers. Spring brought cold rainy days and chilly nights, which slowed the early growth of the apples. Thankfully, July and August finally brought warmer sunny days that helped the apples to mature on time.

Most orchards are currently open, or will be, as of Labor Day weekend. I am told the apples are bountiful and juicy. The early offerings will include Vikings, Macouns, Paula Reds and Jersey Macs. Check your orchard’s Facebook page to see which apples are currently ready for picking.

September 17th, Maine Apple Sunday will fall during the peak picking times. A lot of orchards offer tractor rides deep into the beauty of the orchards. Maine families enjoy weekend outings. The opportunity to stroll through the rows of old growth apple trees invites the opportunity to hear the birds singing and the kiddos pointing out the best sun ripened Early Macs and Honey Crisps, Cortland and even Milton apples.

You know the old saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away!” Doctors and nutritionists agree that is really true. They encourage us to pack them for a pick-me-up healthy treat. You’ll eat and bake them into pies, apple crisps, and one of my favorites, a warm baked apple with a little brown sugar inside with whipped cream. Yum! Making applesauce is a fun family project. Homemade applesauce is a real Maine treat. Fresh pressed apple cider can be bought at the orchards and grocery stores throughout our state. The individual flavors of each apple brand can be tasted in the cider. Warm mulled apple cider with a cinnamon stick as a stirrer is always a fall favorite after an afternoon of apple and pumpkin picking at your local orchards and farm stands.

Mainers are blessed to share the bounty of one of our state’s healthiest treats. If you store them in a cool dry place they will last throughout the winter. This year I hope you will enjoy the pleasures that local Maine orchards bring to our families and visit multiple area farms.

2023 Blistered Fingers Family Bluegrass Music Festival

Mark August 24, 25 & 26, 2023 on your calendar! The Blistered Fingers 59th Family Bluegrass Music Festival will be filling the air waves with Bluegrass Music!

The Litchfield Fairgrounds in Litchfield, Maine, offer the perfect venue for this family-friendly 4 day event. The event opens for “Early Bird Camping” at 8am on Sunday August 20th for a week of camping, jamming and family fun. Early Bird Camping is only $10.00/day Sunday till Wednesday. First come basis electric hook-ups are only $35.00 for your entire stay. Nightly jamming sessions, lots of food trucks, warm showers, indoor bathrooms and campfires add to your festival experience.

Visitors and musicians hail from all over the country bringing together bluegrass music lovers and musicians to this awesome summer venue! 2023 Windsor Fair

Sunday, August 27, 2023 is the opening day of the 134th Windsor Fair. A time to experience “9 Spectacular Days of Down-Home Farm and Family Hospitality!” A time that brought Maine families together since 1889!

Think of the changes fair goers have seen. In the early years, farmers took time away from their farms to bring their prized crops, cattle, horses, sheep and pies by horse and buggy to this social gathering. The fair highlights all the hard work Mainers accomplished during the past year. The Windsor Historical Society’s historical village showcases a copper shop, blacksmith shop, a saw mill and other period homes and buildings. It’s well-worth a stroll down memory lane.

The 2023 Windsor Fair spotlights the same actions and values only in a much advanced way! The Maine Agricultural Fairs showcase all things summer. You will find 4-H horse and cattle judging, oxen and horse pulls, prize winning steer, lambs, goats, donkeys, chickens and everyone’s favorite pig scrambles.

Each day presents a variety of options to satisfy everyone’s interests. You can spend the afternoon in the grandstand watching harness racing, or playing Beano in the Beano Hall, or strolling down the giant midway enjoying fair food and rides.

Every evening you could splurge by watching demolition derbies, tractor pulls and the finest entertainment Maine has to offer. Friday night ‘s entertainment includes Maine’s own 12OC providing music and a giant fireworks show to follow. Tom Foster is a long-time Windsor Fair President for the past 30 years. He is the fair’s biggest cheerleader. He shared with me what he loves about the Windsor Fair and why he thinks it is so important for today’s youth and families to participate in the many fair’s activities. Tom believes in giving Maine youth the opportunity to showcase the love and care they have developed with their animals. He believes it will create confidence and teamwork skills they’ll need for future life projects.

Tom enjoys every venue as he gave us a tour in his golf cart. The fairgrounds cover many acres with several buildings. This year the Windsor Fair is adding a new event – the Miss Windsor Fair Apple Queen contest. It will be held Thursday, August 31st at 6pm in the entertainment area. There are two categories: Miss Windsor Fair Teen, open to 9th–12th graders, and Miss Windsor Fair Apple Queen, ages 17–25. All entries must complete several components before the time the contest begins. Each girl is expected to write an essay, participate as fair ambassadors during the fair and participate on stage Thursday, August 31st. Jennifer Fortin is the pageant coordinator and was just crowned the SLICC USA AMBASSADOR 2023 in Florida in July. Her daughter also participates in pageants. They love working with contestants to build their confidence and enjoy their pageant experience. This pageant is designed to showcase their personality, people skills and willingness to work together. Scholarships are available. The winners will participate in the Fryeburg Fair in October. No experience is needed as Jennifer will work her magic. Entries are open until August 11th. Go to the Windsor Fair website for details.

Snow Pond Cruises

The clang of the boat bell and a friendly voice calls out “All aboard the Snowdrifter II!,” as Captain Gary Bennett welcomes his passengers to a relaxing 2-hour tour on Snow Pond in Oakland, Maine.

Snow Pond Cruises has been captivating visitors for the past 10 summers. Captain Gary, his wife Brenda, and their little Yorkie Yoda are the official greeters. They’ll usher you down the garden path to the stunning, spotless, and comfortable pontoon boat waiting to whisk you away on a time-stopping adventure. You will experience the lakeside cottages, summer breezes, scenic shorelines and amazing wildlife.

The end of the lake is home to an amazing wetland. Nesting sites of Common Loons, Black Terns, Least Bitterns and SandHill Cranes are just a few of the wildlife creatures who summer here too.

Caption Gary says each tour is unique. He caters to the needs of his passengers. “Lobster on the Lake” or moonlight romantic cruises, weddings, anniversary and birthday parties, remembrance tours or the sunrise professional photography trips, the Snowdrifter II has provided its passengers with a memory they won’t soon forget. Locals and visitors alike enjoy his extensive knowledge of Snow Pond, telling many stories of past and present day lore. Nursing homes and senior living groups frequent the wheelchair accessible boat along with many families. Captain Gary has a special “Junior Associate Caption “ program for kids 10 years old and younger. They learn to navigate and perform crew duties while reporting their results directly to the Captain. There are lots of photo opportunities ending with a march down the isle to receive a a special certificate.

Check out their Facebook page where you can view one of Gary’s latest adventures at the far end of the lake. While guiding a tour he noticed a mother loon was caught up in some netting on her floating nest. Her mate looked on helplessly calling out for help. The loon mom was in distress. After assessing the situation, Captain Gary eased into the lake. Momma loon allowed him to free her. Her egg had fallen out of the nest during the struggle and sank to the bottom of the lake. She watched while he retrieved and replaced the egg in their nest. He said the bottom was very squishy but managed to complete his task. You could watch the video on their Facebook page. Even More Excitement is Planned for 2023 Event

Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce’s 31st Annual Taste of Waterville is planned for Wednesday, August 2, from noon to 11 p.m. at the Head of Falls off Front Street in downtown Waterville.

Taste of Waterville is a day-long event with a variety of food options from area restaurants and food trucks, vendors, live music, beer/wine gardens and an expanded brew sampling. There will be a return of our popular cornhole tournament to add to the excitement.

This year’s evening concert opener is the popular band, Dakota, with our headliner 12OC continuing to rock the night away. Downeast Brass will be a featured band, with additional entertainment and timelines currently under development.

Applications are now being accepted for restaurants, food truck and food-related vendor participants. Taste of Waterville encourages participation from both Mid-Maine Chamber members and non-members throughout the region. Effie Dodge, owner of BoxDrop Mattress & Furniture, is a woman on a mission. She is a 21st century entrepreneur. Four years ago when her kids were little, she was looking for a way to capitalize her business abilities and spend as much time as possible mothering her three children. She researched a unique way to run her mattress and furniture business as a “by appointment only showroom and warehouse facility.”

Effie has the only Maine franchise of BoxDrop Clearance Mattress & Furniture Center. It is located at 55 Grove Street in Waterville. She began her journey on Bay Street in Winslow with her 800 square foot showroom and 8 mattresses. Today she operates a 5,000 square foot warehouse showroom.

The day I visited, a truckload of couches, sectionals, recliners and mattresses had just been delivered. The crew was busy finding room to incorporate them into inventory.

Along with Effie, her 17-year-old daughter, Jenna, and 15-year-old son, Emryn, work part-time to learn the business. Effie’s youngest son, Forrest, who is 6, enjoys spending time at the showroom too. Geoff Lidstone, from Skowhegan, is Effie’s only full-time employee. He has been part of her family for over 15 years. Geoff is in charge of organizing inventory and working the sales desk.

The way the process works is really efficient. Customers call in, email or reach out on Facebook. Effie or Geoff will have a conversation with them. Once they learn their client’s needs they schedule an appointment in the showroom.

Evolution Salon & Spa spent over 11 years at their 15 Bay Street, Winslow, location. When the building was sold last spring. Ray needed to find a new home for the Salon. Bill Mitchell found him a perfect spot and they are now at 319 Upper Main Street in Waterville. It is the old Hallee home and TV and Appliance store, the big white house on the corner of High Street and Upper Main Street where they currently occupy the main floor.

There are plans in the works to expand onto the second floor. They will be offering additional services, including Massage Therapy, Lash Artists, Estheticians, and Nail Artists…Making this a true venue to pamper yourself.

The salon has added a new product line called Milkshake, an Italian beauty line. Another new service that the whole crew is embracing is a line of human hair extensions. These professional extensions are of the highest quality and require training and certification to use their brand, “Aqua,” in the salon.

Evolution Salon & Spa carries a full line of hair and beauty products by Surface, Eufora, and Milkshake, their newest line. Evolution Salon is dedicated to using products that are healthy and green, ensuring a low environmental impact.

Heidi and PJ Vicneire are the current owners of an almost 100-year-old market in North Anson, now called Vicneire’s Elm Street Market. The Vicneires also added a laundromat and ice cream shop to the location.

Heidi worked for the two previous market owners for close to 20 years. She had always dreamed to own it one day! When the opportunity arose nearly two years ago to purchase the business, Greg Theriault, a retired businessman who recently returned to the Waterville area, was happy to help the Vicneires. Greg helped them create a business road map to ensure North Anson’s hometown gathering place flourishes for years to come. He taught them it is all “in the numbers!”

Vicneire’s Elm Street Market provides a variety of services that impact the daily lives of North Anson area residents every day. PJ, who also owns Vicneire Logging, takes the early shift. Before the sun comes up, PJ arrives and makes the coffee. He opens the doors and welcomes the staff and the early bird customers. They are open from 6AM to 8PM 7 days a week. In the morning, the restaurant is well-known for their breakfast pizzas and freshly made egg sandwiches. Their freshly brewed coffee is free all day for their patrons over 62.

Vicneire’s Elm Street Market is an old-fashioned General Store. It’s filled with everyday needed items, and some unique Maine gifts. Gas, fresh produce, and quality meats cut in-house are available too. Your choice of chicken, pork, beef, deli meats and cheeses, freshly ground hamburg and all the delicious cuts of steaks await your supper and grill. Call ahead and your order will be waiting for you!

Vicneire’s is known for their great fresh dough pizzas, such as the Big Mac and Chicken Bacon Ranch. The most popular sandwiches are the Python and Steak Bombs. The Knight and Squealer are favorites too. The menu offers many choices including gluten free options including pizza crust, wraps and hamburger buns. They serve hot and cold sandwiches and ready-to-go meals. Assorted garden salads, in-house made coleslaw, ham, chicken and egg salad are personal favorites of their neighbors.

A separate building houses a self-serve laundromat and a seasonal ice cream stand. They recently upgraded and refreshed the laundry equipment and site. Locals can stop by all day to throw in a wash, then do their shopping, fill up their gas tank, and get lunch or ice cream while their clothes get cleaned. Vicneire’s offers the best in country living!

Everyone knows the lady in charge is Heidi. Her smile and positive attitude create a family atmosphere. Her faith guides her outlook toward the staff and customers. Everyone at Vicneire’s cares about each other. If a patron doesn’t come in at their regular time, the staff notices and they are not afraid to make a wellness call. New ideas by the staff are welcomed by Heidi and PJ. Their employees are a huge part of the success of the business. “We couldn’t do any of it if it wasn’t for the amazing group we have. We are a big family here at Vicneire’s!”

A customer, Bradley Clark, carved a larger-than-life wooden beaver with a chainsaw, which welcomes the locals. Benny the Beaver is so popular, that when he was injured in a truck accident and returned to Bradley for treatment, the locals were upset. Both Heidi and PJ got calls at all hours of the day and night announcing Benny’s disappearance. They finally had to put a sign out front confirming that he was in rehab! Patrons were so happy when Benny returned that they were seen taking photos with him.

Heidi, PJ and their children Lucas, and Makayla, work in the store. Heidi’s mom, Darlene, works the morning shift too. Their oldest son, Nicholas, currently living in Boston, also helps out when he’s home. Don’t forget that Grampa Greg is only a call away!

Vicniere’s Elm Street Market is in this marathon for the long haul, making plans for future renovations to make the customer’s experience better. PJ says they are knocking off each project, one at a time while not forgetting to have fun every day!

If truth be told, I grew up in the same neighborhood as Greg Theriault, a time when kids were allowed to ride their bikes, gather nearby with friends and enjoy an afternoon outside. Our only responsibility was to be within ear reach when Mom called you home for supper.

We both graduated from Waterville High in the class of 1968, along with What About Maine’s Duane Wheeler.

Greg graduated from Thomas College in 1972 and received his BS in Business Administration and Accounting. In 1986, he graduated from New Hampshire College with an MBA. Greg spent the next 34 years holding various positions in accounting and finance for some prestigious companies including Jackson Laboratories, Loring Short and Harmon and R. C. Moore Trucking Co.

Greg has three daughters: Erica White of Jefferson, ME, Heather Vose of Londonderry, NH, and Heidi Vicneire of Embden, ME. Greg is a proud grandpa of 8 grandchildren. Summer, Skyler, Landon, Basel, Ava, Nicholas, Makayla and Lucas all keep him young.

Fast forward 50 years…we all reconnected with each other at our 50th class reunion. Greg was living in Southern Maine. He owned the One Stop Storage and a U-Haul dealership in Biddeford. He oversaw 150 storage units and local moving services. Greg, along with his partner, decided to cash out and move closer to family.

The Waterville area was lucky to welcome them back home. Greg’s daughter, Heidi, and son-in-law, PJ, were considering the purchase of the Elm Street Market in North Anson. They asked for Greg’s expertise. He helped them put a business plan together and they went on to purchase the business. He has continued helping them make their money work for them.

Greg found being retired is not all it’s cracked up to be. He needed a project. Greg reached out to Heidi and PJ asking how their laundry mat next to the store was doing? An opportunity arose to purchase the Fairfield Laundromat. He took the time to research the numbers, and what he learned was the possibilities were within reach.

Fred Oriola purchased the Fairfield Laundromat building in 2018. He created a clean, efficient, state of the art laundromat. His washers and dryers accept coins or debit/credit cards. Greg was able to track the usage and make his decision.

In March of 2023, Greg embarked on this journey. His goal is to provide personalized customer service, add more in-house options and be open from 7AM to 8PM daily. He tries to get there early, only to find his early bird patrons waiting for him to open. The last wash must be in by 7PM.

Greg enjoys chatting with his customers. He’s found that the cozy atmosphere, clean machines, high-capacity washers and dryers, and convenient location bring folks from across Central Maine to the Fairfield Laundromat. He has had customers from Hartland, Gardiner, Unity and Skowhegan, as well as the Waterville area.

There is a small lounge with a TV and snacks available. Folks like the atmosphere and quick service enabling them to check laundry off their to-do list.

Maine Maple Sunday Weekend® 2023

March 25th and 26th begin the celebration of the 40th Maine Maple Sunday Weekend ^® . Maine maple sugar producers are ready for the boil! Across Maine you can see the steam from the sugarhouse evaporators streak skyward and fill the air with the aroma of maple syrup being made.

2023 marks a fresh start for Mainers to visit their local sugarhouse for a fun family adventure in the great outdoors. Spend the day touring the sugarbush on foot or by a horse drawn wagon. Learn how 40 gallons of sap gets turned into 1 gallon of sweet maple syrup. There will also be Easter egg hunts for the kids. Each sugarhouse offers different adventures. You will enjoy the diversity of flavors each sugar maker brings to your breakfast! Maine maple syrup and other maple products are good alternatives for health-conscious Mainers. Shelley Bacon from the Bacon Farm in Sidney is happy to share the stats on how maple products are full of vitamins and are lower calories than regular sugar or sweeteners.

Shelley and her staff have developed some unique, tasty offerings to tempt your taste buds. A smoked BBQ maple rub adds a distinctive flavor to your pulled pork and grilling favorites. Maple pepper, coated nuts and cotton candy are only a few of their maple offerings.

Doug Tibbetts from Raider’s Sugarhouse in China is a maple tree conservator. He has 100-year-old maple trees he still taps each year. His joy is sharing the secrets of the sugarbush. His wife, Gail, and their friends, Bob and Nancy, keep the kids busy with their annual Easter Egg Hunt both days.

All sugar makers including the Wilson family in Albion work together when the call goes out that the sap is running. The race is on to boil! The sap must be processed within 24- 48 hours of being collected. The season is about 6 weeks long. They all told me this year’s warm winter may start the sap flowing a little early but probably won’t extend the season. Warm days and cold nights are the key to keeping the sap flowing.

When a tree falls in the neighborhood and no one sees it, did it happen? Well Dana Lawrence, a licensed arborist and owner of Dana Lawrence Tree Service, would take down the tree and clean up the mess!

In October 2016, Dana put his 32 years of experience cutting firewood and taking down limbs for neighbors to good use, creating Dana Lawrence Tree Service. He quickly became a licensed arborist.

Dana Lawrence Tree Service is fully insured and has plenty of tree climbing equipment, bucket trucks, chippers, pulp truck and log yard. Together with his friend, Barry Wing, jobs soon came their way. Word of mouth from satisfied customers has allowed Dana to hire Josh Doin, a safety-conscious arborist who is not afraid to swing high in the canopy. This year Dana added CDL driver and laborer, Cameron Peaslee, to the mix to form a well-oiled machine. Dana’s partner, Stephanie, keeps the paperwork in order along with his daughter, Janelynn, who keeps the jobs up to date. Dan’s daughter, Crystal cuts, splits, and delivers firewood. Stephanie’s son, Gabe, and family dog, Timbah, keep everyone smiling.

Dana and his crew give each project their best from start to finish, leaving the site clean and safe. The wood can be left at the homeowner’s request, although most folks don’t want to keep it. Dana and his crew move the wood to the company’s woodyard where they cut, chop, and chip the wood to create firewood and mulch they deliver to other customers. Dana visits each site giving the customer ideas of what he would suggest being done, along with a plan and a free estimate.

Dana works with homeowners, commercial businesses, property managers, real estate agents, and insurance agents, making sure everyone’s needs are being met.

Dana believes he has the perfect combination: an exceptional crew who love their jobs, an outstanding safety regiment, and the belief they are small enough to provide personalized service with a fair price. Jobs are scheduled in weeks, not months.
